About
This is the website of North Durham Constituency Labour Party.
North Durham has been represented by Labour MPs since its formation.
A semi-rural constituency, the major population centres of the constituency are Chester-le-Street and Stanley. These towns are surrounded by smaller villages with lots of character and some unique names including No Place and Sleepy Valley as well as the old mining communities of Beamish (famous for its Open Air Museum), Tanfield (and its well known railway), Tantobie, Sacriston, Pelton, Craghead, Ouston, Lumley and Bournmoor.
North Durham has beautiful scenery, a rich heritage and a strong community; however it does face social challenges familiar in many former mining areas.
From the General Election in 2024, the former Lanchester Ward joined the North Durham Constituency. Whilst this change was based on the Local Authority Boundaries at the time, a local boundary review has resulted in a number of new wards also having some representation in North Durham. Most notably Consett South (Castleside), Weardale (Muggleswick Parish). Conversely both Sacriston & Witton Gilbert and Lumley and West Rainton have parts of their wards (and namesakes) represented by the City of Durham Constituency.
On 4 July 2024 Luke Akehurst was elected to represent North Durham in Parliament. He lives in Tantobie in the Annfield Plain and Tanfield Ward and has taken on the same constituency office as his predecessor the Rt Hon Kevan Jones (now Lord Beamish).
According to the Chester-le-Street History Society, Luke is the 64th Member of Parliament to represent Chester-le-Street.
